Declan is married to Patricia and they have three children Tadhg, Olivia and James. Although the family's roots are firmly in the north west they now live and work in Dublin.
In theory, given Declan's love of all things sporting, this could present a dilemma if, for example, Leitrim and Dublin were ever to meet in an all Ireland final!
In truth, Declan's interest in ball games transcends traditional rivalries. Hurling stirs the same passion as football and rugby leaves him every bit as hoarse as soccer does. In the event that a ball, of any shape, is unavailable, Declan has even been known to strap on some skis and take to the mountain air in the Alps. A passion discovered in the early 90's while living and working in Switzerland.
In his spare time Declan supports his children in their team sports while inwardly reciting the mantra, 'it's only a game'!
When not grinding his teeth on the sidelines, he likes to take his bike out for a spin with a few of his like-minded saddle-sore friends.
Declan is a member of the Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club in Dublin - but he also enjoys switching from the road to his mountain bike for scenic rides in his native Leitrim and on trails through the beautiful Ballyhoura mountains in county Cork.
Always up for a challenge, he has completed quite a number of cycling events over the last few years including: 'The Wicklow 200', 'The Sean Kelly Challenge', 'The An Post Tour of Sligo', The 'Westport Sea2Summit Adventure Race' and 'The Rock Adventure Duathlon'.
Amongst the most enjoyable was a charity spin down the west coast of France, from Dinard to Lourdes - a fundraiser for the Irish Pilgrimage trust.
